Tufted leather ottoman with a twist

     When starting a project my favorite part is working on the design and picking out materials. I knew I wanted a leather tufted ottoman with large nail heads.  My old ottoman was made out of cherry wood, but over the years it had more dings and chips than cherry wood if you know what I mean. I fell in love with this rich dark chocolate leather and the I chose 1″ raised nail heads instead of smaller plane ones. Having teenage boys who like to rough house, over time the leather on the ottoman will become more distressed looking and if the nail heads get dinged and scratched, the ottoman will look more rustic. When choosing your materials for a project, you need to look at long term. You may like something today and hate it in six months or what you want may not be practical.  The measurements of the ottoman are 48″ x 48″ and I have three raw hides and approximately 100 iron nail heads for this project.   When designing this ottoman, what I liked about my old ottoman/coffee table was that it also doubled as storage, so I had to think of a way to add storage to the ottoman, but I wanted a clean look. I wanted to hide my storage space  I liked the idea of creating two storage areas instead of one big space. You will see why later.   Now that I chose what materials I wanted to use, the size and build a hidden storage area, I just needed to figure out how deep  I wanted the storage area to be and the total heighth of the ottoman. Since the storage area was going to be hidden inside the ottoman, I realized I could make the storage the entire depth of the ottoman, so I made the depth 18″.            ...
